Every UGC deal needs a contract. It doesn't have to be a 10-page legal document — a simple one-page agreement covering the essentials protects you from scope creep, late payments, and rights disputes. Here's what to include and why.

Essential contract clauses

Payment structure that protects you

The industry standard for UGC is 50% upfront, 50% on final delivery. For deals over $2,000 I recommend a three-part structure: 33% on signing, 33% on draft delivery, and 34% on final approval. Never deliver final files before receiving full payment.

How to handle revision requests

Include 1-2 rounds of revisions in your base rate. Beyond that, charge per revision (I charge $75/round for minor tweaks, $150/round for reshoots). Define what counts as a revision vs. a new deliverable in the contract — changing the entire concept after filming is not a revision.

Why a simple contract beats no contract

A contract doesn't make the relationship adversarial — it makes expectations clear for both sides. Most disputes I've seen in the UGC space come from undefined scope or unclear usage rights. Thirty minutes spent on a simple agreement saves hours of back-and-forth later.
